The Rolling Stone song “I Wanna Be Your Man” (1963) Written By McCartney and Lennon

Fact: The Rolling Stones 1963 rock hit song, “I Wanna Be Your Man,” was actually written by Paul McCartney and John Lennon from the Beatles.

Back 50 years ago, it wasn’t out of the blue for Beatles writers Paul McCartney and John Lennon to write songs for their friends. Back in September 10, 1963, they wrote “I Wanna Be Your Man” at the Rolling Stones Studio in London’s De Lane Lea.

The two groups were arranged by the Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham. At this time, the Stones were extremely young and hadn’t learned the process to writing their own music. This was usually the case for most bands at this time. The Stones in their first few albums encompassed several cover songs.

Andrew Loog Oldham is the Beatles publicist. He ran into them as they both stepped out of a cab. He invited the two to the Stones studio where Lennon and McCartney finished off an idea McCartney had been working on. Rolling Stones lead singer Mick Jagger, and Keith Richards would credit the two in helping them get a better understanding for how to write song lyrics.

Mick Jagger was recalling the song in 1968 when at the studio, Lennon and McCartney walked up to them stating they had been working on a tune. Jagger stated that at the time, “they were real hustlers then.” “The way they used to hustle songs back then was great.” The stones were looking for something pretty commercial and the song the duo set up seemed to be just that.

The song would top the British charts at No. 12. Meanwhile, some of the greatest band were blowing up during this time in the UK. So No. 12 wasn’t too shabby.
