Fact: Alfred Hitchcock’s Only Academy Award Acceptance Speech was Five Word-Long
We are all familiar with lengthy, emotional and teary Academy Award acceptance speeches but one of the most famous directors of all time is an exception. Alfred Hitchcock made an acceptance speech just once and it was comprised of just five words.
Hitchcock has actually never won an Oscar. He, however, received a Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award – a really high Academy honor. Over the years, five of his movies got the best director nomination but none of them won.
Upon receiving his distinction, Hitchcock made one of the briefest speeches in the Academy Awards history.
“Thank you… very much indeed!” was all that Hitchcock said after walking out on the stage in 1968 and received the award from West Side Story director Robert Wise.
Regardless of the fact that he didn’t win an Oscar award, Hitchcock was voted the Greatest Director of all time by Entertainment Weekly. He was also knighted in 1980, the year of his death. He was nominated to Greatest Director of all time by Entertainment Weekly. In addition, Walt Disney refrained from Hitchcock from filming at his park because he made “that disgusting movie Psycho.”
